Recently, smart lock features have crossed an important threshold, thanks to the Aliro digital key standard from the industry group behind the universal smart home standard Matter. Yesterday, at an event in San Francisco, Dreame announced the Riponex X10 Ultra Smart Lock, an Aliro-compatible smart lock and video doorbell combo that will use the standard.
That Aliro support means that the Riponex X10 Ultra will let any smartphone that uses the standard unlock it via NFC with a simple tap. The smart lock also offers hands-free unlocking, although it’s GPS-based rather than using UWB, something that makes the Aqara Smart Lock U400 my current favorite for iPhone users. The company’s recently launched Navo Smart Lock A10 also uses GPS hands-free unlocking, similar to other smart locks like the Level Lock Pro. The Matter-compatible Riponex X10 should work with any major smart home platform.
Apart from Aliro over NFC and GPS hands-free unlocking, the Riponex X10 features palm vein recognition, the tech that lets you hover your hand over the lock to unlock it, which is something I loved in my review of the TCL D2 Pro last year. Dreame says the scanner has a 159-degree range, which could make it a little easier to get used to than the D2 Pro, which I found had a very limited range wherein palm vein scanning works. (TCL hasn’t published that particular spec, but I’d guess its range is quite a bit less than 159 degrees.)
Dreame had a dummy version of the new smart lock on its show floor, but it was under a glass dome and unavailable for trying out. In person, though, it’s a slim, glossy, rectangular smart lock with a visual design that, uh, really reminded me of Marlboro cigarette boxes? An interesting choice.
The smart lock will be quite a bit more feature-packed than the simpler Navo Smart Lock A10. For one thing, it will have a 3K camera on the outside with a generous 180-degree field of view. The interior portion features a 4.45-inch display for viewing the camera’s live feed and talking to whoever is on the other side of the door. It wasn’t clear to me whether the camera portion would be exposed to smart home ecosystems that support Matter 1.5, the version of the standard that added camera support last year. I asked Dreame to confirm.
As for when it’ll be available, that’s unclear, as a floor representative I spoke with at Dreame’s event didn’t have a concrete answer. I’ve asked the company via email to share pricing and availability of the Riponex X10 Ultra Smart Lock, and will update when I hear back.
